The
1998 Data Protection Act |

|
| 2.1 |
nelig.com
respects the privacy of all those
who visit and contribute to our website.
Regarding the collection and processing
of data concerning individuals, the
1998 Data Protection Act requires
that all information we collect should
be:
- processed lawfully, fairly and
subject to pre-conditions;
- held for specific and lawful
purposes;
- adequate, relevant and not excessive;
accurate and up to date;
- kept no longer than necessary;
- compliant with the rules regarding
the right to access, correction
and erasure of information;
- set up to avoid unauthorized
or unlawful processing, accidental
loss or destruction;
- transferred to another Country
only where adequate, equivalent
protection exists.
More information on these principles
of Data Protection in the UK can
be found here and the Act
itself can be read in full here. |

What
information do we collect? |
| |
|
| 3.1 |
Personal
data is collected at nelig.com primarily
through the 'Friends of nelig' registration
system, which requests of all applicants
their name, post, employer, email
address, work address and notes on
what they are currently doing to promote
emotional literacy. Of these, we publish
on nelig.com all but work address
information. The purpose of publishing
this information is to enable practitioners
to identify and communicate with other
like-minded individuals. The purpose
of collecting address information
is to enable us to send you ocassional
printed matter (for example the nelig.com
postcard calendar which we mailed
to all friends in December 2001). |
| |
|
| 3.2 |
From
time to time we might also request
and collect information for other
purposes. An example of this is the
NELS petition previously published
on nelig.com, where information was
requested in order to create a list
of supporters for a proposed National
Emotional Literacy Study. In all such
cases, information which is collected
with the intention of publication
on nelig.com will be so indicated
(ie, it will be clearly written that
the data requested could/will be published
on the website) and in all such cases,
address/telephone/fax information
(where collected) will not be published
on nelig.com. |

How
is this information collected? |
| |
|
| 4.1 |
Data
collected by nelig.com is gathered
through online forms completed and
submitted by users visiting the site.
|
| |
|
| 4.2 |
You
have the right to request details
of all information stored about you
by nelig.com and to expect this request
to be complied with within a reasonable
time period. You also have the right
to request the removal and destruction
of both stored and published data.
All such requests should be made to
the nelig.com secretary via email. |
| |
|
| 4.3 |
nelig.com
wishes for the data it stores and
publishes on individuals to be as
up to date as possible. If details
you have submitted previously to nelig.com
have changed we would welcome notification
of this from you. Your 'Friends of
nelig' data, for example, can be updated
by re-completing the registration
form and ticking the update box there
before submitting. |
| |
|
| 5.0 |
How
do we protect this information? |
| |
|
| 5.1 |
Where
data is collected and stored at nelig.com
it is processed solely for the purpose
for which it was requested and in
isolation from any other data. If
you have registered to become a 'Friend
of nelig,' for example, your submitted
data will be stored in isolation from
the data you might have submitted
in any other form on the site. |
| |
|
| 5.2 |
nelig.com
will not pass on to other parties
address/telephone/fax information
without your expressed consent. Should
we ever receive from a third party
what we consider to be a reasonable
request to contact in this manner
users on whom we hold such data (for
example from a publishing company
wishing to send promotional literature
through the post), we would write
to all applicable users first via
email and forward only data for those
individuals who give their consent. |
| |
|
| 5.3 |
Should
nelig.com ever request from its users
data described by the 1998 Data Protection
Act as 'sensitive personal data' (eg,
race, ethnic origin, religious/political
beliefs, etc), this data would be treated
in the same manner detailed for address/telephone/fax
data in sections 5.1 and 5.2. |
| |
|
| 5.4 |
Data
collected by nelig.com is stored in
password protected databases. Ordinarily
this is accessed only by the nelig.com
webmaster and the nelig.com secretary.
Ocassionaly, however, it might be
necessary for other individuals within
Southampton City Council to work with
these files (for example, IT support
staff). In such cases these will be
employees working within the Southampton
City Council Data Protection Policy,
which complies with the 1998 Data
Protection Act. |
| |
|
| |
Further
enquiries on data protection should
be directed to the webmaster. |
