THE EMOTIONAL
LITERACY CHALLENGE
For some time now education
policy-makers have sought to improve academic
achievement by testing and target-setting.
Less attention has been given to how schools
can stimulate a desire to learn and pleasure
in learning.
Antidote argues that
the most effective strategy for enhancing
attainment is to help young people develop:
1. The belief that they
can learn
2. Deep trust in their teachers
3. Curiosity about what is being taught
This is most likely
to happen when all pay close attention
to the quality of the conversations that
take place within the school and outside.
As Cotham Principal James Wetz says, Œthe
school community will thrive as staff
and student voices are heard, listened
to and acted upon¹.
The Emotionally Literate
Schools conference will look at some of
the innovative ways in which schools are
creating climates for learning, and addressing
the specific challenges created by the
social contexts in which they operate.
The conference¹s
parallel events are aimed at school students
as well as staff, and everyone else who
has an interest in developing young people¹s
curiosity and motivation.
By taking part,
you will have the opportunity to pose
difficult questions, play with interesting
ideas and take exciting risks as you think
about your own school or organisation
and explore:
How can you best integrate
Citizenship, PSHE and the Healthy Schools
scheme?
What interventions are most likely to
enhance the emotional climate in your
school?
How can you ensure these improve the quality
of learning?
