Emotional Literacy at Rugby High School: the story so far...


September 2005: whole staff training for teaching and non-teaching staff on emotional literacy. Arranged by SENCO and Assistant Headteacher. Staff introduced to the main concepts of emotional literacy; input from LABBS colleague (basic strategies to use in school) and school EP (Solution Focused Brief Therapy).

11 Nov 2005: first meeting of EL interest group - 8 colleagues including 2 non-teaching staff - to consider the kinds of EL work already happening at RHS, areas for development. What do students feel? Action: to use form time programme to find out from students 'What does it feel like to come to RHS each day?'

21-25 Nov: 'Cool to be Kind Week' - whole school and staff involvement eg random acts of kindness, positive affirmation activities.

30 Nov 2005: EL group meeting - review 'Cool to be Kind Week'. Positive outcomes; discuss how to extend this across the year. Consider student reponses to 'What does it feel like to come to RHS each day?'.

20 Jan 2006: Solution Focused Brief Therapy training for 10 staff including non-teaching staff and 4 members of EL interest group. SENCO arranged a morning session with school EP. Experiential session; agreed to meet again, review progress re use of techniques in school. Initial planning for sharing skills with all colleagues.

25 Jan: EL interest group meeting - sharing experience of SFBT training.
